Backup Restore Drill Template (30 minutes)

A repeatable restore drill + logging sheet to build confidence in backups.

Why this drill exists

Backups often “look fine” until the day you need them. This drill is designed to catch restore failures early.

1) Choose your three test items

File: one critical document or folder
Email: one message or mailbox item
App data: one small dataset (or export) from your key system (POS/accounting/CRM)

2) Drill steps (repeat every quarter)

Pick a test destination (safe folder or test VM) that won’t overwrite production data.
Restore the file and validate it opens and is correct.
Restore the email item (or export/import test if SaaS backup isn’t available).
Restore or export the app dataset and confirm you can open/use it.
Record the time and any issues; update your documentation.

5) What to improve if the drill fails

Backups: add immutability/offline copy.
Access: ensure you can reach backup console during an incident.
Coverage: ensure M365 and SaaS are included if required.
Speed: improve bandwidth, storage performance, or restore approach.
